Online Gift Shopping

Do you think of going to the online only when you’ve got a plane to catch or a passenger to pick up? If so, you may be missing out on a great opportunity to take advantage of items you can only find at online gift shops. In fact, these days many well-to-do jetsetters are taking time to shop at the online, based on the availability of deals on fine merchandise. Here’s what you need to know about gift shopping at a rather unlikely location.

The Statistics

Recent research by Generation Research has found that sales of items such as cosmetics, perfumes and luxury goods at onlines across the globe have increased substantially 30 % in the past several years. And the numbers are only expected to rise in 2012 and beyond. This means that you are apt to find new retailers moving into your local online soon.

The Stores

What kind of shops can you find at some of the world’s largest onlines? How about Tiffany and Company? This revered brand will show up soon in Japan. Estee Lauder is following suit with planned shops to go into smaller onlines across Brazil and China.

These are just a couple of the more well known retailers who are making the move to online malls. But they are not the only ones. The next time you visit an online, expect to see storefronts offering high-end purses and luggage, Swiss watches, fine liquors and candies, and even upscale clothing.

The Culture

Researchers are attributing this new obsession with online gift shopping to a recent economic bounce back. During the worst of the global economic recession, many commercial and leisure passengers stopped flying except for necessity. Now, travelers are back in full force and willing to spend their money on luxury goods.

The luxury market is, indeed, booming once again. And much of the money from shopping comes from Chinese and Middle Eastern travelers, who enjoy buying foreign especially Western goods to take back home.

But it could also be the convenience factor. Many wealthy business people spend a lot of time flying – and in onlines. Rather than just checking emails during a layover or while waiting for a flight to board, why not get some holiday or special occasion shopping done? With the wide variety of new retailers joining the ranks of newsstands and snack shops, there is sure to be something that catches every passenger’s eye on the way to or from a flight.

Of course, the advantage of buying at the online is often lack of sales tax or duties. Often, the price on luxury goods is cheaper when buying at an online in a foreign country as opposed to paying exorbitant shipping fees tacked on to the purchase price back home.

Next time you think of shopping for gifts, head to online parking and take some time to stroll down the concourses filled with all manner of goods, from perfume to handbags. Chances are you’ll get a great deal on some high quality merchandise.
