Let me pose a hypothetical sitution to you. Suppose your distro of choice, whatever it may be, were to fold and no longer exist. What would you do? Would you switch to another distro, or would you jump to a different OS?
This will likely never happen for the larger Linux distros, but the situation is never totally improbable. Do you know what you would do if this were to happen?
I migrated to Arch Linux after using Linux for a few years, and if I were to wake up tomorrow to the sad news that Arch decided to close up shop, I would probably switch over to either Debian or Gentoo. I used Ubuntu for a few years so Debian isn’t a big stretch for me, but Gentoo intrigues me and I might choose them instead.
What would you do if this happened to you? Would you stick with your defunct distro and compile from source? If you switched to a new distro what would it be? Or would you just give it up and switch to Windows or Mac?

I use Debian and Mac OS X. If Debian (and its offshoots) died, I’d probably suck it up and install Arch or Slackware.
I think, one good thing on Linux is, is one Distro is dying, there will be a new one, fitting your needs. I’m using Arch, and if for some reason Arch will die, there will be a new Arch, may be made by some one of us.
